Don't rush if you get into a car accident in Dubai! Understand the handling process in 5 steps, a must-read for beginners

Dubai Traffic Accident Handling Process

1. Stay calm and ensure safety

•  Move the vehicle to the roadside (if there are no injuries and the vehicle can be moved) to avoid traffic congestion.

•  Turn on hazard warning lights and set up warning signs.

•  Check for injuries; if anyone is hurt, immediately call emergency services (998).

2. Report to the police / Obtain an accident report

•  Call 999 to inform (or use Dubai Police Application)

•  All traffic accidents, big or small, require an official accident report from Dubai Police.

•  Options:

•  Call 999 directly to have police come to the scene (for serious accidents or unclear liability)

•  Use the Dubai Police Application or Smart Police Station (SPS) to remotely report minor accidents (applicable for minor collisions without injuries)

3. Obtain the accident report

•  Police will determine fault and provide an electronic accident report, usually color-coded:

•  🟢 Green report: the other party is fully at fault

•  🔴 Red report: you are fully at fault

•  ⚪️ White report: both parties share responsibility / unclear situation

4. Report to your insurance company

•  After receiving the accident report, promptly contact your car insurance company.

•  Required documents usually include:

•  Accident report

•  Driver’s license, vehicle registration card (Mulkiya), Emirates ID

•  Photos (if any) and insurance policy

5. Vehicle repair

•  The insurance company will assign a partnered repair shop to handle the vehicle repairs.

•  If the other party is at fault, repair costs are usually covered by their insurance company.

•  The deductible or excess is borne by the responsible party.

⚠️ Notes

•  Hit and run is a serious offense; report immediately.

•  Do not settle compensation privately before police confirmation.

•  Non-cooperation with police procedures may result in fines or unclear liability.

•  If renting a car, contact the rental company immediately and follow their accident handling procedures (usually also requires reporting to Dubai Police to get an accident report).
